In 2008, founder and original Executive Director,
Dorothy Davis gave birth to a vision that saw CNHFH as having a
self-sufficient, successful future. In order to increase sustainability
of rural communities through housing development, CNHFH must first
realize it own sustainability in terms of administrative funding. The Problem~ The policy of CNHFH has always been that 100% of contributions and funds raised through the area chapters goes towards building and renovation. Additional funding sources, including mortgages were allotted at 75% of funds going back into community development and 10% being Tithed to Habitat for Humanity International and the Global Village work, leaving only 15% remaining for all overhead expenses- including administration and travel expenses. And with such a large service area to cover it isn't hard to imagine that the 15% of funds is rapidly depleted at the start of each year, draining the effect CNHFH can have in its communities. The Theory~ Dorothy saw a chance for the administrative portion of the CNHFH to become independently sustainable through an endowment fund. The theory is that by saving away sufficient funds in a Money Market account, earmarked for CNHFH overhead, then those expenses could be paid for by the interest earned on the account without ever having to deplete the principle. |

| The
Tragedy~ Dorothy Davis was a women of extradordinary character and dedication to Habitat for Humanity. She worked tirelessly to establish CNHFH. Work that, due to the unique design and size of service area, Dorothy completed with little guidance and assistance for HFHI. She layed the foundation for Nebraskans to revitalize and build their communities themselves, work that CNHFH is determined to continue. She empowered Nebraskas to take control of their futures, despite their 'rural' title and limited resources. This was a battle she waged along side her fellow Nebraskans while she waged a personal battle against breast cancer. Just after Christmas, 2009, Dorothy Davis lost her battle with cancer. She passed away at home, supported by her loving husband and Habitat for Humanity volunteer, Rod Rezanic. Rod remained committeed to the mission of CNHFH in memory of his wife and continues to serve on the Board of Directors paving the way for future CNHFH activities. |
The Goal~ $1,000,000.00 One milliion dollars! It seems an overwhelming number, that's true. But when you consider the amount of territory we serve, and the numbers of families, business, groups, and organizations that we partner with, and the love we Nebraskans share for one and other, the goal is attainable. If each person in our service area contributed their daily pocket change for one year (an estimated $125.00 on average) the total would be an astounding $21,250,000.00!!! Suddenly our mere $1 million goal doesn't seem so unreachable, does it? |

| The
Dream Realized~ In October 2010, new director Kathleen Burke announced the Dorothy Davis Memorial Endowment Fund. "This fund was her idea, her dream for the future of CNHFH. I can't think of a better way to honor her legacy with this organization and her committment to its sustainability than by forever attaching her to the endowment fund, and thereby forever attaching her to its success," Burke said when asked for the motivation behind the tribute. |
